Ok, slight tangent here. Sephiroth may not be a playable character, however he is a world renowned villain and in my opinion at least, worthy of a Top Trump card of his own.
First appearing in FFVII he was the most astounding villain I had ever come across in my gaming experience and he still stands out as my favourite bad guy. Seriously – I get goosebumps when I hear the ‘Sephiroth’ music during the big FF boss fights!
Rather than being the crazy loon type of evil, it was his quiet, civilised manner that made him seem all the more foreboding throughout the game. Sure, Crisis Core shows us that Sephiroth is indeed a hero gone insane, however it’s his calmness that won me over as my top ‘Big Bad’. Oh, and I don’t know why, but he does seem kinda sexy too. Throw in the brains and the body and well, he does come out quite high in the Top Trumps ratings.
Originally designed for FFVII by Tetsuya Nomura as the opposite of Cloud, his look was created to stand out against Cloud, hence the tallness and long, flowing silver hair – no mad spikes to be seen. In addition, his name supposedly comes from Kabbalah, in which the ten sephirot on the Tree of Life represent different aspects of God.
Sephiroth’s popularity has led him to appear in other FF outings such as Crisis Core and the CGI movies and even a part in the Kingdom Hearts series. Random fact - and one I found slightly disturbing – in his Kingdom Hearts outing, Seph’ as we like to call him, was actually voiced by ex N’Sync member Lance Bass. That’s just wrong wouldn’t you agree?!
All in all there are few bad guys that can top our main man Sephiroth. For example, IGN says Sephiroth has become one of the most recognised and famous villains in video game history. We cant argue that, and neither can the regular ‘Top Villian’ and ‘Top Boss Fight’ polls, where he always appears in the top ten…
*Playability and lastability ratings are for the game FFVII rather than Sephiroth himself, since he’s not playable!
