Comic book tie-ins are not renowned for their depth and playability, but Batman: Arkham Asylum easily stands out from the crowd as an atmospheric action adventure that goes from strength to strength.

The setting of Arkham Island makes a perfect backdrop for a game of cat-and-mouse between the Joker and Batman. Facing off against not only the perpetual grinner but almost every super-villain the Bat’s ever put away, you get to search, chase, slink and fight your way across the different environments.

These vary hugely, from the whitewashed walls of the Asylum’s medical wing and the creepiness of Arkham Manor through to the island’s slimy sewers and hallucinogenic encounters with the Scarecrow.

The game could have been much less; a simple brawler with a few Bat-gadgets thrown in, but instead time has gone into developing a deep story and gameplay experience.
